Start with an assessment

A dental assessment helps clarify what is suitable, what the treatment can achieve and what care may be needed afterwards.

Your options

Choosing a suitable tooth restoration

The material and type of restoration depend on the amount of tooth affected and how much healthy structure remains.

Tooth-coloured filling

A restorative material is placed into a prepared area to repair suitable cavities or small areas of damage.

Blends with natural tooth colour

White fillings vs amalgam

There are a number of dental filling options available to you at Freshdental. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Tooth-coloured composite

The main advantage of a tooth-coloured filling is that it looks more natural. The same materials can even be used to repair chipped, broken or worn teeth.

Looks more natural; ideal if you don’t want your filling to be seen
Bonds to the inside walls of the tooth cavity, reducing the amount of drilling required
Seals and protects the inside of the tooth from bacteria
From £350
Usually one or two fillings in just one visit, depending on the case

Amalgam (silver)

Silver, or amalgam, is the most common traditional filling material. Although it is the least expensive, it isn’t the most attractive choice.

Less attractive choice for visible teeth
Requires more healthy parts of the tooth to be removed as it does not chemically bond
Contains mercury
Typically the least expensive option
Completed in a visit depending on the case

Common questions

Questions about this treatment

These answers cover common considerations. Your own suitability and treatment plan should be discussed with a dental professional.

They are designed to blend with the tooth, although an exact match can depend on shade, position and the condition of the surrounding tooth.

This varies with the size and position of the filling, biting forces, oral hygiene and other factors. A filling may need repair or replacement over time.

If a tooth has lost a substantial amount of structure, a larger restoration may be more suitable. Your dentist can explain the options after examining it.

Some temporary sensitivity can occur. Contact your dental team if it is severe, persists, worsens or your bite feels uneven.
